There are a number of law firms that handle vehicle accident cases.

If your case involves a crash with another automobile, that is one thing. If the crash involves a truck, that is a different type of matter.

For more information about truck crashes, see the various blog posts on this site dealing with that subject matter.

Steps Our Legal Team Takes After a Car Accident

There are several things that need to be done promptly after a vehicle accident.

The first of those is of course to make sure that the injured party is getting proper medical care. That proper medical care is best rendered by going to the emergency room that day if in fact that is merited. The emergency room bill can be hefty. You only want to go to the emergency room if in fact it truly is an emergency. If it is not an emergency, you may want to consider declining transport to the hospital from the scene of the crash. If you can get there on your own, then do so.

Where your vehicle was drivable from the scene of the crash and you in fact drove it, that would suggest of course that your injury is not that severe.

Once any emergency medical care has been taken care of, then you should contact your primary care doctor. If you do not have a primary care doctor, then find one. That primary care doctor should be the one who oversees your care.

Why Choosing Your Own Medical Providers Matters

Some attorneys will refer injured parties to medical groups that specialize in accident cases. There is nothing inherently wrong with that. It does however look a bit suspicious if the case goes to trial. Defense counsel for the insurance company will disclose the fact that the primary provider was somebody picked by the attorney and not by the patient. That may give the case a certain complexion that may not be favorable to you.

Because of that, it is best that you pick your own providers, perhaps with some attorney input. There should however be a clear chain of treatment showing that you went to your primary care doctor who then made referrals to other specialists if necessary. That type of treatment is best for you. It is probably also best for your case in terms of maintaining your own credibility.

Keeping Your Attorney Informed Throughout Your Case

Your attorney needs to know who the providers are that you’re being referred to. The attorney may have some advice in terms of how to deal with those providers and also whether or not the provider is likely to be aggressive in making sure that you get well. At all times the objective should be for you to get well quickly. The attorney may know of those providers who are likely to promote that ideal. There are other providers that are more passive in that regard. Those providers probably should be avoided.

How We Build Evidence to Maximize Compensation

The evidence that may have to be presented at trial or presented prior to trial to a claims adjuster is going to consist for the most part of pieces of paper. Those pieces of paper are your medical records. They are your medical bills. Your records of lost income. They are notes of what it is you have lost aside from simply medical bills and lost wages.

If you are a piano player and cannot play the piano anymore because of your injury, that’s important. It must be noted. It must be developed so that the full extent of your loss is presented.

Preparing a Comprehensive Damage Sheet

At trial the plaintiff may present what is called a “damage sheet”. That damage sheet consists not only of your lost income and your medical expenses but also of the intangibles. Those intangibles are your pain, your suffering, your inconvenience, your embarrassment, the accommodations that you had to make because of your injury and a lot more. All of that needs to be spelled out.

The way to spell that out is through a damage sheet. It is specific as to what you lost on the day of the crash. It is specific as to what you lost in the days following the crash. The sheet is specific as to what you have lost in terms of work performance and in terms of contributions to family life. All of those nitty-gritty facts must be developed and presented on this damage sheet.
